I am itching to ride.
Every time I scratch I itch more.
I was looking at my maps, pondering a place to ride.
I look at my maps a lot, it is one of my favorite things.
I had never been north of the Great Salt Lake.
On the map it looks very desolate and flat.
It was actually quite green and pleasant, reminded me of pictures I've seen of Ireland.
I took I15 North to the 3rd Brigham City exit, well I actually exited the freeway and entered again several times trying to find a route that was moving.
I headed west through Corrine and continued west until I saw signs pointing to the Golden Spike Historical Site.
The road was very straight.
I didn't realize that ATK had such a large facility out in the middle of all that nothing.
There were several things that I wanted to see: The Golden Spike Museum, closed at 5pm and I was there after 6, There is an old railroad grade that is now a road that seems interesting, and there was Promontory Point, the bottom of a peninsula surrounded by the Great Salt Lake and very close to Freemont Island.
I chose the Promontory Point route.
It was nice and sloppily paved for most of the route southward.
It became gravel just before the Narrows section.
The gravel was nicely graded and was easy to ride on.
There were however, many cows that are seemingly not very smart.
Many calves would wait until I was right on top of them and then run parallel with me for a while.
This would happen mostly when I was going slowly.
If I was moving at a better clip, the cows would still wait until I was right there, but couldn't match my speed, and the encountered did not last as long.
I did see one calf run straight into a fence.
It was pretty pathetic.
No wonder we eat them and they eat grass.
The pic above is of Freemont Island.
There were many bugs, especially the later it got.
I don't believe I made it all the way to the Point.
I was running out of day and it was getting chilly.
Next time I want to try the railroad grades.
JP
The big ride is a month away!
